Mental health

Our vision is to conduct world-leading translational research and innovation in mental health and dementia care and deliver this for the benefit of our local population.

The Mental Health Domain works across the areas of dementia and mental health issues.

The domain is led by the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health in The University of Manchester.

GMMH is one of the most research-active mental health trusts in the country, with one of the highest levels of recruitment to clinical trials for mental health. GMMH also has the second-highest National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Capability Funding awards, out of the 60 mental health trusts nationally, reflecting the very high levels of hosted, externally-funded research.

We have strong engagement with the Medical Research Council (MRC) and with NIHR, with six NIHR Senior Investigators and, over the past five years, five chief investigators on NIHR programme grants, each totalling between £1-2m.

The Mental Health Domain also takes advantage of the state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities at the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre to conduct dementia research under the direction of Professor Karl Herholz.
